Personal Trainer
The aim of the Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training is to develop learners with existing knowledge and skills in gym instruction to pursue a career in personal training. If you are aged 16 years and over and hold a gym instructor qualification wishing to become self-employed and running your own personal training business, then this course is perfect for you.
Entry Requirements
- A suitable Level 2 qualification in Gym Instructing
- The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary
- There is an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) and application of number involved, and learners should have basic skills in communication and application of number pitched at levels 3 and 2 respectively
The qualification comprises of 6 mandatory units:

Unit 5 | Programme design and delivery for personal training |
Unit 6 | Professionalism and business acumen for personal trainers |
Successful achievement of all six units must be accomplished for the full qualification.

How long is the course and where does it take place?
These courses can be delivered as a short course or as part of a 12-15 month Apprenticeship.
Short Course
The Level 3 Certificate in Personal Trainer course will be delivered over 2 consecutive weeks, Mon–Fri, 9.30 am – 4.00 pm. If you want to complete the Level 2 and 3 courses together to achieve the NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Fitness Instructing and Personal Trainer, you will need to attend our 4 week programme, Mon-Fri, 9.30 am – 4.00 pm.
You will be required to attend the course at our SW Training office: 4 Beacon Court, Great Barr, Birmingham, B43 6NN. We are located on the Scott Arms junction.
The course will comprise of classroom and gym-based training (we have a fully functional gym at our office) and home-based work which will need to be completed prior to the start of the course and during the course.
What jobs can I do with this qualification?
This Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification will allow you to be qualified as a personal trainer, designing and implementing exercise programmes for a range of individual clients by collecting and analysing client information to ensure the effectiveness of personal exercise programmes.
What are the progression opportunities?
- This qualification provides progression to Level 4 Certificate in Advanced Personal Training.
- Learners may also progress onto qualifications in related sectors, like Sports Massage, where they will be provided with the knowledge and skills to practice sports massage alongside personal training in the health club environment or own business.
- Alternatively, learners may broaden their knowledge and skills by progressing onto qualifications mapping to additional branches of Level 3 and 4 qualifications, such as Strength and Conditioning, Postural Assessment and Corrective Exercise.
